Product Spotlight: Using Eucalyptus Wood – A Sustainable Hardwood

May 17, 2013

Shining a Light on Wonderful Eucalyptus Wood

When you’re searching for eco-friendly building materials, you don’t have to sacrifice the other qualities you want. Eucalyptus wood, a fast-growing hardwood, is sustainable because new growth only takes a few years to mature. It is desirable because, unlike other timbers, it has very little taper over long lengths.  And generally speaking (each Eucalyptus species is slightly different) it is harder that most North American hardwoods.

Using Sustainable Eucalyptus Wood in Building Construction

If you are aiming for LEED certification, materials make a huge difference. If you are concerned about the deforestation of slow-growing trees, you should have other options.

When you scrutinize the qualities of various hardwoods, understand the benefits of using Eucalyptus wood for construction. It is not just an alternative wood to other traditional hardwoods, but a top choice for many contractors as they build various construction projects.

What are the benefits of Eucalyptus wood?

Eucalyptus wood is comparable to white oak and hickory in strength and can withstand denting and tension. Compared to white oak, it is much more resistant to brown rot fungus. It is less expensive than other traditional hardwoods like mahogany, hickory and cherry woods.

Eucalyptus wood durability will also hold up to machining and turning properties. It sands to a smooth semi-polished surface and absorbs stains evenly. It is ideal for broad and narrow flooring, custom millwork, and staircases. It is also perfect for solid and veneer cabinetry, wall panels, and residential and commercial applications.

Are our Eucalyptus Timbers unique?

amaZulu has worked with the EPA to produce the first non-arsenic, non-erosive pressure treatment for Eucalyptus. This treatment is safe for children’s playground and animal exhibits, unlike the CCA (Copper Chrom Arsenic treated poles).

We partner with growers who are keen to offer many sizes and lengths especially as supporting structures for walking bridges over lazy rivers, ponds lakes and other natural or man-made water areas.

Our Eucalyptus poles have a variety of applications. Larger solid eucalyptus poles can be used for construction support structures while eucalyptus poles with a smaller diameter are perfect for fences, decorative trim, trellises and much more.

More benefits of Eucalyptus Wood

  • Eucalyptus is classified as a hardwood providing structural supports for buildings.
  • It is available in a variety of sizes from 1”- 8” in circumference and 8’ to 18’ in length.
  • Eucalyptus can be pre-fire retarded and impregnated at the time of pressure treatment to make a safer product. The treatment will not wash off.
  • It is sustainable, versatile, beautiful, and perfect for your next project.
