What Zoos Should Provide When Requesting Eucalyptus Poles

To get an accurate eucalyptus quote for a zoo project, send a pole schedule tied to drawings, not just a total pole count. For each group of poles, the request should identify the application, size, quantity, burial or mounting condition, exposure, fire requirements, connection details, and delivery dates. Eucalyptus is a natural material, and the right size, treatment, and connection depend on where each pole will be used. A complete request lets the supplier see the exhibit conditions before recommending a package.

Start With the Application

Identify what each group of poles is doing:

  • Structural support
  • Shade or shelter feature
  • Screening or perimeter element
  • Decorative exhibit feature
  • Guest-facing architectural element

Each application asks something different of the pole. A frame for eucalyptus pergolas carries roof loads. Perimeter privacy screening mainly needs consistent height and spacing. Don’t combine structurally different applications into one line item just because the poles look similar.

Provide Diameter, Length, and Quantity

amaZulu’s eucalyptus poles come in 8 ft., 10 ft., 12 ft., and 18 ft. lengths (Custom lengths are also available on request). Standard diameters run from about 1 in. to 6 in., and larger diameters and custom lengths are available on request.

Because eucalyptus is natural, all dimensions are approximate. The poles have minimal taper, but the bottom of a pole may still be wider than the top. If the project has tight tolerances, show the acceptable range and which end must meet it. Don’t treat the pole like a manufactured tube with a perfectly uniform diameter.

If poles will be direct buried, the ordered length must include the buried portion. amaZulu’s general guidance is to bury roughly one-quarter of the total pole length. The project engineer and local building code set the final requirement.

Show Ground Contact, Exposure, and Animal Access

For every pole group, indicate whether it is:

  • Direct buried
  • Mounted above grade
  • Exposed to rain or irrigation
  • Located in a wet or humid area
  • Interior or exterior
  • Inside an animal habitat or in guest areas only

All of our treated eucalyptus poles are rated for ground contact and direct burial. Cutting a pole removes the treatment from the exposed end, so let us know your required lengths up front and include them in your quote request. amaZulu’s eucalyptus poles guide puts the ground-burial lifespan of treated poles at 20+ years. It also states that treated poles are non-toxic and safe for zoo exhibits.

Exposure still shapes the embedment, drainage at the base, and the maintenance plan, so include it in the quote request rather than adding it later.

Include Fire Requirements Early

If the project requires a specific treatment, document it. amaZulu offers two fire-retardant options:

  • Inherently fire-retardant poles: treated at the factory, with an approximate 3- to 4-month lead time
  • Locally applied Class A fire retardant: sprayed on the poles for a faster turnaround

Identify fire requirements before the quote. The option you choose can change procurement timing by months.

Attach Drawings and Connection Information

Provide plan and elevation drawings showing where the poles go. If the engineer has already developed connection details, include them as well.

Useful information includes:

  • Base condition
  • Hardware or bracket concept
  • Bolt or fastener locations
  • Required embedment or above-grade mounting
  • Structural design criteria, where applicable

Eucalyptus works with standard hardware, and the arsenic-free treatment avoids hardware corrosion. amaZulu recommends hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners. It also recommends pre-drilling to prevent splitting and brushing preservative on any cut or drilled surface. Fire-retardant poles need the same attention at cut ends and drilled holes. The connection design still needs to reflect the project’s actual structural requirements.

Include Delivery and Phasing Information

For a large exhibit project, note:

  • Delivery location
  • Required-on-site date
  • Whether delivery is phased
  • Whether custom sizes are required
  • Whether fire treatment or other special treatment is required

Custom and treated products can take longer than regular stock items. For phased exhibits, see how to coordinate eucalyptus pole orders with the install schedule.

Turning the Request Into a Pole Schedule

The most useful eucalyptus request is a pole schedule tied to drawings. For every pole group it should identify the application, size, quantity, burial depth, exposure, animal access, treatment, fire requirements, and schedule. That gives the supplier enough information to flag mismatches before material is ordered. It also helps the zoo team coordinate engineering, procurement, and construction around the same pole package. Send amaZulu the pole schedule and drawings when requesting a quote for eucalyptus in a zoo exhibit or guest area.
