Natural Variation Designers Should Expect in Eucalyptus Poles

Expect approximate dimensions, slight taper, and visible differences in color, grain, and nodules from pole to pole. Build those into the drawings from the start. Eucalyptus poles are a natural material, not manufactured tubing, and that distinction matters when designers set tolerances, create repetitive layouts, or develop connection details. Much of the material’s visual appeal comes from the same characteristics that create the variation.

Expect Approximate Dimensions

amaZulu’s eucalyptus poles come in 8 ft., 10 ft., 12 ft., and 18 ft. lengths. Standard diameters run from about 1 in. to 6 in., and larger diameters and custom sizes are available on request.

All of those dimensions are approximate because the material grows naturally. If a drawing calls for an exact manufactured diameter, the design team should revisit that assumption before the package is ordered.

Diameter Will Not Be Perfectly Uniform

Eucalyptus grows naturally straight and has minimal taper compared with many natural poles. amaZulu’s eucalyptus poles guide describes how consistently the poles hold their width from end to end. It is still wood, though, and the bottom of a pole may be wider than the top.

Design details should allow for:

  • Small changes in diameter from one pole to another
  • Minor taper from end to end
  • Natural surface irregularities
  • Variation around nodules

A bracket or collar designed to fit only one exact diameter can create unnecessary field problems.

Color and Grain Will Vary

Natural eucalyptus will not read like a painted metal system, so expect differences in color and grain.

On a large hospitality, restaurant, residential, or attraction project, this variation can help the installation feel organic rather than repetitive. If the design calls for a more uniform appearance, eucalyptus accepts both paint and stain well. Communicate that expectation before ordering so the supplier can discuss what’s realistic.

Nodules Are Part of the Look

The ring-like nodules on eucalyptus add visible character. Their spacing and prominence will vary from pole to pole.

Treat that as a natural feature. Don’t try to force every pole to match a single sample exactly.

Samples Show Character, Not Exact Replication

If the team reviews a sample, it can help evaluate:

  • General color range
  • Surface texture
  • Grain
  • Nodule appearance
  • Approximate scale

It should not be treated as a guarantee that every production pole will look identical.

Build Tolerance Into the Drawings

Good eucalyptus details let the natural material vary within a reasonable range. Consider:

  • Adjustable or oversized connection hardware
  • Diameter ranges instead of one exact number
  • Field verification at critical connections
  • Mockups for repetitive visual installations
  • Clear orientation requirements, since the wider end may need to go up or down

Repetitive layouts need the most attention. On a row of eucalyptus pergolas or a long run of privacy screening, small differences between poles are most visible.

Field adjustments are normal, so plan for them. amaZulu recommends hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners and pre-drilling holes to prevent splitting. It also recommends brushing preservative on any surface that is cut or drilled on site, so the treatment keeps protecting the pole. Leave time for field verification when you coordinate eucalyptus pole orders with the install schedule.

Natural Variation Should Be Coordinated, Not Eliminated

The goal is not to remove variation from eucalyptus. It is to anticipate it before fabrication begins. When the drawings account for approximate dimensions and natural appearance, contractors can install the material with fewer field conflicts, and the finished project can still look controlled and intentional. For a eucalyptus package, send amaZulu the drawings, target diameter range, quantity, and visual requirements so the natural variation can be considered during material selection.
