Maintenance Tips to Increase The Lifespan of Bamboo Fences

November 4, 2013

If you’ve chosen bamboo as your fencing material, you already know it can be long-lasting. You’ve done your homework and discovered that with some upkeep and maintenance, bamboo fences can look great for years to come. Wonder exactly what you need to do to keep your bamboo fence in shape? Here, we offer tips so you don’t have to look further.

How to maintain your bamboo fences

Maintenance varies depending on how you installed your rolled bamboo fencing. If you attached it to an existing chain link fence to cut down on labor, do a yearly check on the fasteners to make sure they are tight. Tighten or replace them as needed. If you affixed your bamboo fence to posts, check the posts every year to ensure they are securely planted in the ground. Rain, animals, kids and high winds can loosen the posts, so pack more dirt around the base or pour in some cement to eliminate air pockets.

If the decorative bamboo fencing was adhered by metal brackets, check for rust or any corrosion.  If you see any corrosion, simply grab a wire brush.  This should brush away pretty easily.  Then treat the brackets with a bit of lubricant.

Sometimes poles settle into the ground.  If the bamboo fence panels are now touching the ground, you’ll want to inch it up a bit.  The less contact it has with the soil, the better.  Florida has enough humidity, the last thing you want is for your bamboo fence to sit in wet soil during our wet months.

After inspecting the bamboo fence, you should examine the condition of the bamboo itself. If you didn’t stain or seal the fence upon installation, you should definitely do that now. We’ve written another blog post about staining and painting bamboo.

Natural bamboo has a waxy outer layer that may fade when exposed to the elements. When this happens, you can add sealant to bring your bamboo back to life. If you’d like, before you install a bamboo fence, you can also lightly sand and stain it with a finish of your choice for a beautiful look.

By regularly maintaining bamboo fences, you will lengthen its life and keep it intact for years to come.  Our goal is to help you get the most benefit out of the eco-friendly and dollar-saving fencing material.
