Feature Project: Using Eucalyptus Poles at the Bronx Zoo

April 30, 2015

Focus on a Pioneering Project: Powerful Eucalyptus Poles

Tristan Ishtar recently developed a unique solution for a challenge facing the Bronx Zoo.  The contractor for the Bronx Zoo had never worked with eucalyptus poles.  Ahhh, but we had.

The Challenge

The Wildlife Conservation Society contacted me regarding a large shade structure for the Bronx Zoo World of Birds Exhibit. The Conservation Society knew the trellis would be 67’ long, but they had no idea of the cost of materials. The zoo had received an outrageously expensive quote from a general contractor, so the Society decided to bid the project themselves

The Process

amaZulu worked up a preliminary takeoff and sent a material list with pricing. We were awarded the project, but the plans were not finalized. I worked with the contractor to fine tune the design. There were many conference calls and emails between us, the architect, the contractor, and the Bronx Zoo.

The Solution

The contractor for the Bronx Zoo had never worked with eucalyptus poles before. I advised them on using the product and showed them the lengths and diameters we stock. Our poles come in diameters from 1” up to 10” at the base and 8’ to 22’ in length.

It was important that the eucalyptus poles were non-toxic for the protection of the animals. I explained the characteristics of our eucalyptus poles, such as its structural strength (Eucalyptus Poles are classified as a hardwood), the arsenic-free pressure treatment we use, and that trimming the pole negates the pressure treatment.

I worked closely with the contractor throughout the process, responding quickly to ongoing changes and additional material requests.

The Result

The Bronx Zoo loved the shade structure; the Wildlife Conservation Society saved tens of thousands of dollars, and the contractor has a new skill they can market!
