Can Insects Infest Bamboo?

Nefarious Insects Can Infect Bamboo. How to avoid the consequences.

You may have heard us describe the benefits of bamboo on this blog. Or articles have promoted the use of bamboo in construction and architectural detailing because it is a green alternative to slow-growing timber wood.

But what to bamboo’s detractors have to say? The most common complaint we hear is “Can insects infest bamboo?”  Since bamboo is susceptible to infestation by bamboo mites, it’s important that all bamboo is treated against these insects.  The pests have even evolved to tolerate cooler temperatures, so the cold season won’t kill them off. They are truly a nuisance.  The only defense is to treat the bamboo.

Can Bamboo Mites be controlled?

According to the American Bamboo Society, control of a bamboo mite infestation in large groves or areas of bamboo can be challenging to attain. One possible control method is to clear-cut the bamboo and burn the debris. Growers begin and maintain a spray program on the new shoots. However, success may not be assured if the nearby neighborhood contains other infested groves.

Bamboo mites live beneath a thick web on the underside of the leaf. They move onto the culm before it is cut when it has juicy leaves they can feed on. They are so small that growers, who think they’ve killed the mites off with a chemical spray, might be sending ones that have hidden inside the wood to the mill and later the lumber yard.

Also, chemical sprays are absorbed into the bamboo, making it toxic, so you have to ask yourself if you want mite-free bamboo that is the result of heavy chemical treatment. Yet, if left untreated, the mites will spread and indeed live up to the name “pest.”

An alternative to harsh chemicals

But we have good news. Bamboo sold by amaZulu, Inc. is treated in a number of non-toxic ways to prevent pests mites from invading the bamboo. It is pressure treated, not just dipped in a solution. This treatment also prevents the Powder Post Beetle and other pests.
