"Amazulu was able to provide a number of different natural looking finishes to completely redo the Tiki Bar at my waterpark. Recent amaZulu Projects

Delivering Paradise to a Zoo

Situation:

A zoo exhibit was in disrepair with clear signs of thatch rot and decay after just a few years. It was difficult to sustain a quality-looking presentation without constant, costly makeovers.

Faux Reed Thatch Roof

Challenge:

The ideal solution would enable the zoo to:

  • Restore the African exhibit to first-class condition

  • Maintain the traditional authentic-looking appearance of the huts

  • Reduce exhibit maintenance costs by using weather-proof materials

Strategy:

Replace the Natural African Thatch with amaZulu's new faux product line to retain the authentic look while also improving durability. It's easy to install, fade resistant, and has passed stringent ASTM-E fire standards, earning it a Class A safety rating.

Results:

Paradise delivered! A simple installation of Faux African Thatch creating an attractive exhibit with a natural-looking material that will last much longer and look great, regardless of the harsh elements.

Taiga Restaurant

Situation:

Design a bar front that would easily serve as the centerpiece of a room inside the Taiga restaurant.

Challenge:

Create a bar that would:

  • Be durable enough to take a beating

  • Exhibit a unique character

  • Complement the natural materials above the bar

Sanded Finished Solid Bamboo Bar Front

Strategy:

Use solid bamboo in distinctive triangle shapes complemented with bamboo skin board on the cabinets.

Results:

Paradise delivered! The customer was delighted. The amaZulu team created a bar front made from solid bamboo that is unique, durable, and maintenance-free. Shaped in triangles, it not only serves as a showcase focal point for the restaurant, the front facade also complements the bamboo skin board we used to cover the TV cabinets.

Paradise at the Marriott

Situation:

A contemporary Marriott hotel property was in need of a warmer, island-escape image.

Faux Palm Thatch Roof on Resort

Challenge:

Creating the paradise getaway feeling for guests while also using materials that:

  • Are durable

  • Are fade-resistant

  • And can be applied to the existing roof system

Strategy:

We added metal balons and steel screws to securely adhere the Faux Palm Thatch to the existing roof system. A quick installation.

Results:

Paradise delivered! The Faux Palm Thatch easily transformed this standard-looking building into an inviting resort property while also addressing the clients' challenges because our thatch:

  • Is UV resistant so it doesn't lose its natural luster

  • Passes the highest ASTM E-108 fire rating test

  • Withstands 110 mph hurricane force winds

  • Is maintenance free since it does not rot.

The Monkey Bar

Situation:

Salvage a dilapidated building shell, earmarked as historic, by restoring its charm while also transforming it into a thematic bar that locals would find hip and comfortable.

Natural Reed Ceiling Board and Bamboo Trimming

Challenge:

  • Use natural products to create an inviting, paradise feel that adheres to stringent fire codes highly monitored by the fire marshal

  • Capture the charm of the original building but create a retro Tiki bar theme that would attract new energy and repeat customers

  • Ensure the look and feel of the upstairs Monkey Bar to complement the downstairs Waitiki Bar

Strategy:

Deliver a hint of paradise - natural reed ceiling board, trimmed with bamboo, to create an authentic jungle-island feel and introduce special fire-retardant materials to meet safety standards too.

Results:

Paradise delivered! The bar was built on time and on budget while honoring fire codes and meeting client design expectations.

Paradise Arrives at the Lowry Park Zoo

Situation:

The Lowry Park Zoo wanted to improve the African exhibit to make it more relaxing for guests viewing the area and more comfortable for the animals in the exhibit. The customer had also just added a new cable car ride and was looking for rustic materials to make a load queue that would complement the exhibit.

Challenges:

Spruce up the enclosure while also using materials that:

  • Wouldn't be harmful to the animals but create shelter for them

  • Would provide aesthetically pleasing shade for the guests watching the animals

  • Would protect the integrity of the exhibit's natural look

Strategy:

amaZulu's exclusive arsenic-free eucalyptus wood, imported from Africa, and pressure-treated bamboo were the ideal solution.

Results:

Paradise delivered! The Lowry Zoo African exhibit now has:

  • Natural thatch reed panel umbrellas, made from safe, non-toxic materials, to create shade for the animals

  • A wood and bamboo trellis where guests can relax and be comfortable

  • The nearby Skyride has a rustic and functional eucalyptus and bamboo fence panel to create the shape of the load queue and reflect the natural look for the exhibit too.

Retailers Love Paradise!

Situation:

A theme park retailer (Hair Wrapped) wanted a casual, comfortable shaded area to attract walk-by buyers to their store.

Challenge:

  • The structure needed to be inviting and open to enable shoppers to see their products

  • The "store" also needed to be structurally sound to withstand storm winds, hot sun and rain

Strategy:

We proposed an easy-to-install Thatch Reed Gazebo made of galvanized metal

Results:

Paradise delivered! The thatching on the gazebo is secured to round rebar in the frame to allow the thatch panels to lift slightly yet prevent any wind uplift to the structure. The owners now have a permanent open canopy that is accented with pressure treated eucalyptus poles to complete the island store look.
